Eugene Curry, MD

Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon

Areas of Interest:

Foot & Ankle Disorders

Eugene E. Curry, MD, joined the W. B. Carrell Memorial Clinic in 1996. After graduating from George Washington High School in San Francisco, Dr. Curry received his degree in Biomechanical Engineering with Cum Laude honors from the University of California at San Diego. Dr. Curry received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and completed his orthopedic residency at Scott and White Memorial Hospital and Clinic, Texas A&M University in Temple, Texas. His residency included rotations in Houston at Ben Taub County Hospital Trauma Service and Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children.

During residency, Dr. Curry was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and was awarded a fellowship in Foot and Ankle Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee under the supervision of three widely respected and nationally renowned leaders in adult foot and ankle reconstructive surgery – Dr. John S. Gould, Dr. Michael J. Shereff, and Dr. Jeffrey E. Johnson. During that year, he assisted with the care of injured athletes from the Milwaukee Admirals Hockey Team, the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club and the Milwaukee Ballet Company, allowing him to get better insight for the care of orthopedic athletic foot and ankle injuries.

Dr. Curry is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery and a member of the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society. Dr. Curry’s clinical interests include adult reconstruction of the lower extremity with a special focus on athletic, traumatic, and occupational injuries to the foot and ankle and lower leg, such as Achilles tendon disorders and injuries, minimally invasive surgery, correction of bunions and hammertoes, sports medicine and arthroscopy of the foot and ankle, correction of deformity and failed arthrodesis and ankle replacements through internal and external fixation, tendon transfers, reconstruction of ruptured tendons, as well as foot and ankle problems associated with rheumatoid arthritis, degenerative arthritis, diabetes, and related disorders. The coauthor of a book chapter on tendon transfers in the lower extremity, Dr. Curry has presented original research papers at a variety of national medical conferences and has published articles in peer-reviewed orthopedic journals.

A specific area of Dr. Curry’s expertise and clinical interest involves the care of high level athletes with sports injuries of the foot and ankle. Recent breakthroughs in orthopedic technology have enabled patients with ankle ligaments and tendons injuries to return to their pre-injury activities much faster, with shorter periods of immobilization and inactivity, earlier weightbearing, less muscle atrophy and lower reinjury rates than in the past. Dr. Curry utilizes advanced techniques in ankle ligament reconstruction (Internal Brace Brostrom, deltoid and spring ligament reconstruction) and Achilles tendon repair (percutaneous PARS method) to enable athletes to resume their normal activities and return to play with minimum down time.

Dr. Curry serves as an orthopedic subspecialist consultant to the Dallas Cowboys Football Team, the Southern Methodist University Athletic Department and the Dallas Mavericks Basketball Team. He also treats young, elite and recreational athletes participating in college, high school and club sports, such as football, basketball, soccer, tennis, volleyball, baseball as well as dance, ballet, gymnastics and cheer, among others.

A large part of Dr. Curry’s practice involves taking care of the “not-so-elite”, “weekend warrior” and “simply trying to stay healthy” patients. As the country’s population continues to try to remain active and athletic, chronic, overuse and training error injuries are becoming more commonplace. Dr. Curry works closely with other professionals, including physical therapists, athletic trainers and orthotists to help patients return to their pre-injury level of activity faster and to prevent re-injuries.

Dr. Curry is an orthopedic consultant for Arthrex, Inc. and Stryker, Inc., leading orthopedic products companies specializing in making products and assisting surgeons to provide better care to their patients. Dr. Curry travels extensively around the country and internationally to lead courses teaching other surgeons to perform new and advanced surgical procedures better, leading to improved patient outcomes and satisfaction.

Dr. Curry employs a dedicated expert team of patient care coordinators, physician assistant, cast technicians and medical assistants with over 60 years combined patient care expertise. This approach makes the task of taking care of patients during the preoperative, operative and postoperative stages, as well as coordinating non-operative care more predictable, reproducible, seamless and efficient, helping to achieve a high level of patient satisfaction.

Married and the father of four, Dr. Curry enjoys teaching, travel, photography, scuba diving, hiking and spending time with his family. Dr. Curry has privileges at Baylor University Medical Center, Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas and North Central Surgical Center, and is fluent in Russian and medical Spanish.
